For my first proposal, I have chosen to use the Honda ‘Cog’ (Accord) advert. My aim is to keep it realistic but maintain an interest. I plan to do this by using orchestral style music and realistic sounding Foley effects (possibly some processed improvements/additions to add more drama). Firstly I believe that the advert has a powerful message that if you put your mind to something, it can be done. I do not want to ruin this message by making the video seem to artificial and surreal. Although, I do know that Honda’s slogan is ‘The Power of Dreams’, so I could take this into consideration and make the accompanying music track sound quite dreamy and ambient, but aspirational and meaningful.
I have decided to record most Foley effects from similar materials and circumstances as the video shows. For example, using bolts/nails on a metal surface to emulate the sound of the bolts rolling off the car bonnet at 20 seconds in. If the product I achieve does not sound as I wish, I will record something that I think might sound similar, such as drawing pins rolling down a filing cabinet etc. I will then add processing to these sounds to make them sound more cinematic, for a better, more dramatic impact on the audience. I will make sure that I do not make the sounds too unrealistic though, as i feel that this would reflect badly on the overall message and ruin the reality and message of the video. I believe that the recording part of the process will take the longest due to the time that will need to be spent matching the timing and setting up each individual material and surface for a realistic sounding outcome.
After this stage I will attempt to create an ambient/background music track to accompany the video. I have chosen to use an orchestral track as I feel that it will go well with the progression of the video and add a sense of aspiration. I will use the orchestral track to add suspense at points of the video where I want some reactions to seem quite drastic, such as where the wheels are rolling up the ramp at 30 seconds in. I will do this by building or dropping the dynamics of the piece. I may also add some mellow, synthesized strings to the music track to add a dreamy, space like feel to the product to make sure it doesn’t sound to ordinary.
For my second proposal I have chosen to use the Ferrari 360 Spider advert. For this video I plan to focus more on the music and less on the Foley effects (except the engine). I think using very few Foley effects, having the music track the main focus of the video and then adding engine revs will really accentuate the roar of the car. I plan to produce an urban style, trip hop/grime track which will add a city like feel to the video. i will record the car engine sounds and possibly improve them with processing.
The engine sounds are the only Foley effects I plan on using. Therefore I will be able to spend a long time achieving the perfect sound. I may combine a car engine with a motorcycle engine to get a thick and roary sound. I will not be able to record a Ferrari so I will have to improvise to get a similar sound. I Think combining a couple of different engines from different vehicles will give a matched sound. I realize that it will not sound exactly like a Ferrari engine but it will end up sounding much more powerful and out of the ordinary. I believe that this will make it stand out more and grab the audiences attention.
The track I plan on producing will be the main focus of the product so it needs to be produced well. Using a grime/trip hop genre keeps the urban theme through out the video. I will also add sound effects such as swipes and static when the scene changes to keep the video interesting. I hope to add a bass line that plays when the car is moving, to give more feeling and power behind it. Using very few Foley effects will hopefully draw the audiences attention away from surrounding distractions and right on the car.
